5 Tips for Safe Public Hot Tubbing in Omaha
March 09/2020

You’ve been counting down the days until your vacation starts. You have an ahh-mazing resort booked and you can’t wait to let the kids play in the pool, so you can enjoy some relaxation in the hot tub. It’s believed that a few relaxing days in the resort hot tub are on the top of the “to-do list” for more than 75% of parents! But there are a few things we recommend checking out before you hop in to that public hot tub at that fantastic resort because it might not be as clean as you think….

5  Tips for Hot Tubbing Fun and Safety in Public Facilities

“It looks clear to me, but I’m not a water chemist” – The best way to see if the water is clean enough to jump in is to toss a dime into the hot tub. You should be able to tell if it’s heads or tails. If you are unable to determine that, then the water is not clean enough to soak in.  If you are unable to see the drains in the hot tub, you should always steer clear.

“It smells a little funky” – Again you don’t have to be a chemist, but if you are able to determine that there is a foul odor, then there is usually something chemically off in the hot tub and we would recommend not getting in. An odor is usually caused from the lack of using chemicals, meaning they are not being maintained very well. This could cause harmful bacteria’s to pass between you, the water and other patrons that might be using it and could cause a vacation ruining dr visit.

“But there are other people using it and their skin hasn’t fallen off yet” – This goes back to the old age quote, “would you jump off a bridge if somebody else did it?” Just because others aren’t as informed and inquisitive about the safety and condition of the water, doesn’t mean that you should take it lightly. If you see something that looks out of place, simply smile and wave to the other patrons and continue on. You will be better off not getting your “relax on” in that hot tub and will avoid any trips to the Dr. or possible prescriptions to rid an infection.

If something doesn’t seem right, find someone in charge – Although the maintenance personnel might know the situation, they may not be operating their facility properly. If the water is not perfectly clear and you can’t see the main drains or the dime into the bottom of the hot tub, or it smells funky, the hot tub should be shut down until the water quality and chemical levels have been properly corrected. There are State and National Codes that prohibit facilities with a pool or hot tub remain open if they are not at the proper operating conditions. It’s not safe for anybody.

I Plead With You  – There are several things you always want to remember if you are planning on using a hot tub, whether in a public facility or in a person hot tub. Keep these 3 “please tips” in mind:

Please don’t use the hot tub when you have diarrhea or if you have had it recently.
Please avoid drinking or swallowing the hot tub water.
Please get out to use the restroom if needed.

All of these things can put any current patrons or any patrons that may be soaking after you in immediate risk for infections. If you have seen any of these things happen in a public pool or hot tub, you should notify someone immediately so they can properly take care of the situation. If an accident has happened, there are proper procedures that must be taken immediately to prevent the spread of bacteria to the rest of the hot tub or pool, but will require it to be shut down for up to 24 hrs. Don’t let these things scare you out of ever using a public hot tub ever again, but do look out for the warning signs that would indicate it’s best to not enjoy the hot tub this trip.
