How to Prevent Cover Mold in Your Hot Tub!
March 08/2020

Have you looked at the underside of your spa cover lately? You may be shocked to find what is lurking under their. There’s a lot of bacteria that can form under the high heat that is trapped underneath the cover. If the chemicals are being maintained properly and at the correct levels and the underside of the cover is wiped down on a regular basis, there should not be any bacteria growing. At times keeping correct maintenance on the hot tub might slip your mind. Below, we have provided brief descriptions on what causes cover mold, how to get rid of mold and how to prevent it in the future.
What Causes Cover Mold?
When the hot tub has been neglected that you see this issue start to appear. If you have mold or bacteria growing on the underside of your spa cover, there are several things we need to look at:
  • Is your sanitizer (chlorine/bromine) level in the correct range? Has it been extremely low recently?
  • Is your pH level in the correct range?
  • Has the underside of the cover been wiped down and cleaned recently?
At Aqua Palace Spas and Pools we receive calls from our customers daily asking how can we get rid of this nasty thing called Mold. If the sanitizer is low (which will usually be the cause of a bacteria to build), you will need to insure that a heavy dose of chlorine or bromine is added to get rid of the bacteria quickly. On a chlorine system, we would normally recommend to add several ounces of chlorine to your spa water, while leaving your cover open for a cycle (approx 15 mins until your jets shut off automatically). If you are on bromine, we would recommend making sure that you have bromine tabs in your spa and then you should hit it with several ounces of shock (5-6 oz). Always remember to leave your cover open for at least 15 mins before closing it. This will allow all the dead bacteria to gas off and be removed from the water, rather than being trapped under the cover.

When the cover is closed and a large amount of chemicals had just recently been added and/or there is a bacteria building, problems can arise. If there is a bacteria that has been building, it will start to form on the cover, which is where this problem originates from. If a large amount of chemicals have recently been added, it can cause discoloration of the cover as well as pillows and valves in your hot tub.

How to Get Rid Of Bacterial Mold:
The easiest way to clean this bacterial mold off is with a small amount of warm water and a couple tsp. of granular chlorine. Mix it in a bucket first, dip your rag into it and rub on the area or whole cover to disinfect. The chlorine coming in direct contact with the bacteria, will help to instantly kill it. If it has been going on for a long period of time, sometimes after it has been killed, you will still see some residual discoloration that may not be able to be removed. After the cover has been cleaned, we recommend using some of our Nano Spray. A light mist of this product across the underside of your spa cover will prevent bacteria and mold from forming. This is a great product and will help to extend the life of your spa cover! Spraying this on a monthly basis after a light cleaning of your spa cover, will prevent any mold or bacteria from building!
