What is the yellow stuff growing on my swimming pool floor?
March 13/2020

Nobody wants to walk out and see their beautiful pool green or yellow with envy! “But it was BEAUTIFUL just yesterday, what happened”, you might ask? Algae and bacteria form very quickly with the right conditions (or wrong conditions I guess you could say!) If the chlorine level has dipped down, even for just a few hours or multiple days, the bacteria and algae will start to form and will rapidly increase (up to 10 fold per day!). If your filter system is not adequate enough for your size of pool, or if there is a restriction with the filter (ex: needs to be backwashed, filter cleaned, or debris lodged in the impeller of the motor) you will not be getting the full flow rate that you need to insure the water is properly getting filtered. This can also lead to a bacteria or algae issue.  In order to kill the bacteria, we will need to add a special algaecide that specifically treats Yellow or Mustard algae, as well as use between 3-15 lbs of Super Sonic Shock (depending on pool size and how bad the issue might be) in order to properly kill it. The remaining particles will need to be vacuumed off the floor and walls and it is recommended to have your filter system on the “waste” setting as you’re vacuuming, if you are able. This will not allow the bacteria to continue to form and grow inside your cartridge or sand filter system, but instead will throw it out on the ground as if you were backwashing. This is the fastest way to get rid of the issue!
