You’ve probably enjoyed them in hotels or fitness clubs and thought a sauna would be a great addition to your home. While the most mentioned benefit of a sauna is relaxation there are actually many specific health advantages worth exploring!

Benefits of Owning a Sauna:

Sauna owners site numerous pros pertaining to better health and well-being. Some of the popular sauna benefits are weight loss, therapy for joints and muscles, detoxification, reducing stress, increasing blood circulation, enhancing skin tone, clearing cellulite, improving immune system, increasing energy as well as speeding up recovery from injuries and surgeries. Sauna use also helps relieve the pain of arthritis, rheumatism, diabetes, and fibromyalgia.     

While the benefits of a sauna are numerous, you should still consult your physician if you have a history of heart problems, high blood pressure or other health concerns. 

Tips on using and getting the most from your sauna experience:

  • Drink plenty of water before, while and after enjoying your sauna.
  • Take a shower before using the sauna to help open up your skin pores.
  • Remove jewelry before entering sauna.
  • Bring lots of towels in with you to sit on and to wipe yourself off.
  • Start using your sauna for 5 – 10 minutes a day then work your way up. Don’t put your body into shock by starting with 30 minute sessions!
  • The recommended average length of time in the sauna is 15 – 20 minutes.
  • A good sauna routine is to stay in for 10 – 15 minutes, step out to cool off, and then return to the sauna for another “inning”. Repeat as desired but don’t overdo it. If you feel uncomfortable, leave the sauna to cool off.
  • Don’t lay down fully in your sauna as the blood will not be able to circulate effectively throughout you body.
  • When finished, take a shower or bath to cleanse your skin of salts and residues left behind. A cool rinse will close your pores and leave you feeling refreshed.
