How to prepare your hot tub before vacation!
March 13/2020

If you are planning a vacation soon, there are a few steps that you should take to unsure your hot tub stays protected and clear while you are away. Follow these simple steps to enjoy a worry free vacation!

Drain and Refill

If it is about time to drain and refill your hot tub, now is the perfect time. (Remember: Hot Tubs should be drained at least every 3-4 months). By draining and refilling your hot tub, you will get rid of any bacteria that may already be in the water, which could cause your water to turn cloudy much quicker. If properly treated after refilling the hot tub, you will have a better chance of the water staying fresh, clean and clear!

Clean Filters

Filters should be rinsed off with a garden hose monthly and soaked in a special filter soak solution every 3-4 months. It is important to rinse off the filters prior to leaving on vacation, to insure there is no debris that is slowly down your flow and to rid your filter and spa of any bacteria. If you plan to soak your hot tub filters before leaving, make sure you rinse your filter several times thoroughly to insure that you have removed all of the debris and residue from the soaking solution used. If it is not all removed, additional foam will build up quickly once the spa is filled and the jets are turned on.

Add Proper Chemicals

Ensure that your sanitizer (chlorine, bromine, bigunide) are at the proper levels as well as your pH before leaving on vacation. If it has been a week since you have drained and refilled your hot tub or since you have shocked last, it is recommended to shock the hot tub again prior to leaving.

Add a Nature Or Nano Stick

Adding a Nature or a Nano Stick will help keep bacteria away and with much less chlorine needed! A Nature stick will last 3 months and will need to be replaced each time the hot tub is drained and refilled. The Nano stick will last 6 months; the length of 2 hot tub fills. By using one of these sticks, you are able to lower the amount of chlorine in the water from 3-5 ppm down to .5-1ppm (far less than tap drinking water). These sticks are required to be fully submerged in the water of the hot tub at all times to properly work. If the stick is pulled out and dry’s out, it is no longer effective in the water.

House sitter

It is always recommended to have a neighbor, friend or family member come by every few days to check on the hot tub while you are away. The hot tub will need to be tested on a regular basis, even while away. This will insure that the chemical levels remain stable to prevent cloudy water and bacteria buildup. During the winter months, it is also important for someone to simply check to make sure the hot tub is functioning properly and to insure that the breaker has not tripped off, which could cause the hot tub to freeze.
