How to properly winterize your hot tub
March 13/2020

Please pause for a moment to ponder this thought….the most common reasons that people purchase a hot tub is for these reasons: hot water therapy, relax muscles, warm up, relieve tension, enjoy the outdoors, spend time with family members, ease health problems including arthritis, sleep problems, headaches, migraines, back aches, and sore muscles. Do all of these problems seem to disappear during the winter months? The answer is no….they normally get worse. So why would we want to get rid of something that makes our lives so relaxing? That is a good question; we will let you answer it.

Energy Consumption
If you are worried about the energy consumption, our Marquis Spas will never exceed anymore than $25 per month for energy consumption in the dead of winter….that is much less than a trip to the salon to get a massage. You have the convenience of all this relaxation right in your own backyard! You have made an investment in your hot tub, now it’s time to use it to replenish and sustain your health.

If you would still prefer to drain your hot tub during the winter, here are the proper steps to follow to make sure your spa stays safe all winter long:

Use a shop vac to suck out all of the jets, starting with the upper jets and moving down to the lower jets. Make sure you leave the shop vac on each jet for several minutes. It may seem like all the water is out of each jet, but pull the shop vac away and then place it back on the same jet to make sure.

Pull the filters out and place the shop vac against the bottom ports and vacuum all of the water out. This may take awhile as these pipes are fairly long.
If you have a Marquis Spa that has the Frog System on it, make sure to pull out your cartridges to allow any water that may be in there to escape as well.

Vacuum up all of the water in the footwell of the spa. Make sure to also vacuum out the return outlets that are normally located in the footwells also.
In the motor compartment, undo the fittings on the pumps as well as the heater and vacuum out all of the water. If there are any other fittings that you can get to that may be holding water, make sure to clean them out as well. Make sure that you also take off the drain plug on the pumps to allow all of the water to come out.

Vacuum out the drain port on your spa to make sure there is no water left inside.

Antifreeze is not to be used in the winterization process of a spa. It can be harmful to your hot tub shell and equipment and is very hard to flush out when you are ready to use the hot tub again.

FYI: Hot Tub leaks can occur even when a small amount of water has been unattended to and has frozen and expanded in an area. Leaks are very tedious to find and to repair and can be very costly as well. Most of the time, the spas would have to be brought in to a repair facility, as it is not cost effective to search for or repair them in the field. Please keep this in mind when making your final decision to winterize or not.
