How many different types of filters are there?
There are three different types of filters that you can use on your above ground or in-ground pool. They are a sand filter, cartridge filter, and a DE filter. All of these filters are a commercial grade product, built for a long lasting life, extremely energy efficient, and backed by some of the best manufactures in the industry!

Sand Filters are good…
Sand filters are extremely popular as well. Sand filters have had the leading edge for many years. Sand filters can filter out particles that are up to 20-25 microns, which still can not be seen by the naked eye. These tanks are filled with pool grade sand specifically designed for pool usage. The water then circulates through the filter, the debris gets captured in the sand, and the clean water in put back into your pool. Once a week with a sand filter you will backwash, which will stir up all the sand and get rid of all the debris in your pool from a side nozzle on your filter system. If you don’t do this on a regular basis, your filter will become so saturated with debris that your suction and pressure will become very low. Sand filters are normally cheaper than cartridge filters.

Cartridge Filters are better…
Cartridge filters have recently come back in popularity. This filter system is comprised of several different polyester filters that sit inside a tank. These filters are able to pick up between 5-10 microns, which is one of the finest that can be captured. After 35 microns, they can no longer be seen by the human eye. You will be filtering things out with this filter that you can’t even see! To clean your filter, you just pull out the filters and hose them off. Most of the debris should wash away easily, but once they get old enough you will have to soak them in a acid solution to give them a deep cleaning. Then once you are done cleaning them you can place them back in your tank and you are ready to go again.

DE Filter are best...
DE stands for Diatomaceous Earth and will remove the smallest particle of any of the three filtration devices. DE powder is made out of tiny fossilized skeletons of small sea plankton. The filter is comprised of several grids, which collect the DE powder once it is added and that helps to capture all of the small particles in the water. From time to time you will need to rinse off the filter to remove all of the excessive particles so that the filter is able to capture newer particles. Once the filter grids have been rinsed off, you will need to recharge them with additional DE powder. You do this by pouring DE powder either down your skimmer or directly into the pump pot of your pool filter. Within a few short minutes the filter will be recharged and ready to go again!
