Hot Tub in Omaha Water Chemistry Tip 3 - pH is Very Important
March 15/2020

Do all the abbreviations and calculations have you frightened or confused? No need to be a chemist to maintain your spa water. There are simple steps to follow when it comes to taking care of your hot tub in Omaha! It may seem like a lot when you first get started, but before long you will be a PRO! While proper maintenance is important, Aqua Palace can make it easy to understand! If you ever have questions, please call or stop in and we will be more than happy to assist you!

The most challenging pH adjustment is probably going to be upon the initial fill of your hot tub. Many customers in our area find they have extremely high pH when filling their spas due to the hardness in our water. It is important to have the pH level as close as possible to the pH of human skin. This will make soaking in your hot tub comfortable for your skin and also efficient and cost effective for your spa so that your components do not rust and corrode.

Testing Your Water's pH Levels Doesn't Have to be a Hassle!
There are two ways to test your hot tub, either by test strips or a liquid drop testing kit. Using one of these methods is the only accurate way to measure pH levels. You cannot tell pH levels by simply looking at the water or smelling it. Issues can arise whether your pH is too high or too low.

High pH can cause calcium deposits and other hard minerals and metals to form on your hot tub shell and on your components. This will also make your sanitizer less effective, requiring you to use more than normally necessary. Calcium deposits will feel like sandpaper on the interior of your spa shell and the seats, but will also line your plumbing and will cake on the heater and pumps that cause corrosion.

Low pH will cause corrosion of your hot tubs pump seals, pumps, heaters and other metal components. It will also feel very uncomfortable on your skin, as the water is very acidic. It doesn’t take long with low pH to start causing major damage in your spa! Due to the lack of hardness (pH) in the water, the water will therefore search for other ways to get it’s metal hardness back up to try and increase the pH and it does that by attacking the metal components in your spa!

Maintaining Proper Levels is Essential.
Incorrect pH will cause a lot of costly issues if it is not maintained properly. The closer the pH is to 7.5, the more comfortable it will be on your skin as it won't dry out your skin or make it itchy. Making small adjustments over several days will help to adjust your hot tub pH level to the proper range without overshooting the mark and then having to readjust the other direction. Once the proper pH level has been reached, it is usually fairly easy to maintain for a three to four month fill of the spa. If you find your pH bouncing a lot during that time, we also have a product available that will lock in the correct pH level once achieved, thus reducing the maintenance to constantly adjust the pH level.

Towards the end of your 3-4 month fill, you may notice that it is much harder to keep the PH in the proper range and it may be going the opposite direction than it was prior (if it was high, it may now be low). This is a normal occurrence as the water ages. If you are having this issue and you are close to your 3-4 month refill, sometimes it is best to not fight it and go ahead and drain at that time. Draining too early does no harm to your hot tub, but leaving the water in their too long will cause lots of headaches and excess chemical costs!
