Swimming Pool Safety Is Of The Utmost Concern, Especially Around Children
March 15/2020

Staying cool on a hot summer's day is always easier when you have a swimming pool in your backyard. They're fabulous investments for large families, as a source of entertainment for the children, and especially for those who love to swim. With that pool comes inherent dangers and those multiply when children are present. Safety should always be priority number one, so here are some tips to keep your children (and your neighbor's children) safe.

Tip 1- Always ensure adult supervision
There should always be an adult supervising swimming sessions, whether or not your children can swim - no matter how old they are. There should always be 2 or 3 people present at the pool because accidents can occur that even a good swimmer can't necessarily avoid.

Tip 2 - Always have a phone nearby
There's absolutely no reason not to have a phone nearby when you're outside dealing with a swimming pool, especially now that cell phones and smartphones are so prevalent. Having that phone nearby means you don't have to leave your children unattended at the pool to answer your phone inside of the house. In case a catastrophic accident does occur, you'll be able to call an ambulance immediately.

Tip 3 - Be sure to keep safety tools near your pool
By safety tools, we mean items like life preservers and a hook. In almost every instance, it's best if an adult is available to jump into the pool to save a child in trouble, but these types of items should be present if needed. Be sure to store them away from your regular pool toys and ensure they're easily accessible.

Tip 4 - Know CPR and if you don't know how, learn
It's critically important to know how to perform CPR if you own a swimming pool because accidents do happen. Way too many lives are lost because those supervising swimming sessions did not know how to perform this lifesaving procedure. Please check for classes offered in your local community.

Tip 5 - Properly secure pool accessories and never, ever rely on little floaters
When pool toys are not in use, it's always best to put them up out of reach of small children. Leaving them in the pool only tempts children to jump on them. And never, ever rely on little floaters to keep your child safe - when using floaters, always keep your children within reach should they become separated from their flotation device.

Tip 6 - Install a fence around your pool
It's safe to say that a majority of state and/or local governments have regulations in place that require fences be installed around swimming pools. Even if they don't, put one up anyway. Obviously, a fence doesn't guarantee that'll keep everyone out, but it sure is better having one than not.

This should go without mentioning, but it's also critically important to keep pool chemicals out of the reach of small children. Locked storage sheds are ideal for safety and easy accessibility when you need them.
