Why do I still have a green swimming pool?
March 15/2020

Green pools are never a pleasant thing to deal with, especially in the heat of the summer! But now that the kids are getting ready to go back to school, the pool might have been slightly neglected for the last few weeks. So what do you need to do and how can you prevent this from happening in the future? Read on to find out!

What Am I Doing Wrong?
Algae is only able to form when there is a lack of sanitizer present. You may be on a chlorine program or a non-chlorine program, regardless the sanitizer is one of the most important parts of the pool care regimen. Without that level being in the proper range, it will be very hard to keep the pool clear and/or clear up an existing green pool. If your filter system has not been properly cleaned or needs backwashed, you could be fighting more than one issue. Proper circulation and filtration is very important in keeping the particles filtered out that should not be in the pool and preventing the pool from becoming “stagnate” if there is not enough water flow. Stagnate water is a breeding ground for bacteria and algae to form. Throw in the lack of sanitizer and you’ve got yourself quite the mess.

What Do I need to do?
The first thing to do would be to test your pool levels such as your sanitizer, oxidizer (if on a non-chlorine system) and your pH levels. Insure that all of these are in the proper range and if not, add the chemicals that will be needed to get them there. We would also recommend shocking the pool heavily this evening to help kill off the bacteria that is present in the water. It is also very important to vacuum the pool slowly to try and pick up all the debris and algae that you can (even if you can’t see it) to help prevent the spread of the bacteria. Test your water daily to make sure that your sanitizer, oxidizer (if on a non-chlorine system) and your pH levels are staying in the correct ranges. If your sanitizer is not staying in the proper range, you will need to add some additional sanitizer to the pool or increase your automatic feeder. If your pH is high or low, add the recommended dosage of the increase or decrease as needed to get it into the proper range. If your sanitizer level is not staying up where it should be, we know that we are still fighting the bacteria and that we have not gotten ahead of the game yet. This may require a much larger dosage all at once in order to help overcome the bacteria and to help turn the pool in the right direction.

How can I prevent this from happening?
The most crucial parts of water clarity are (1) keeping all of your levels balanced (chlorine, oxidizer, pH) (2) keeping the pool floor and walls cleaned, (3) proper circulation with a proper sized filter system and (4) quality pool chemicals!

Pools shouldn’t be a lot of work to maintain and keep clear IF you are doing all of the above. During the heat of the summer, a small slip up from any of these regular maintenance items can cause a huge problem very quickly.
