Is Baquacil healither to use in my swimming pool instead of Chlorine?
March 18/2020 Due to a lot of misinformation you can find online, Baquacil has gotten the “Best Review for Health” title by many sites you might come across (this isn't a real title by the way!) We are here to tell you the facts of both sides and let you decided which one is best.
Sanitizer Levels:
On a Chlorine pool we typically keep the chlorine between 1-3 ppm in a correctly regulated swimming pool. If you test the water coming out of the tap water at most locations around the Omaha metro area in the city, you will usually get 3 or more ppm straight from the tap water that you are drinking!
On a Baquacil Pool it is recommended to keep the sanitizer level at a minimum of 80 ppm! That is over 25 x the amount of sanitizer that you will be swimming in, compared to a chlorine pool! Although Baqaucil does not have any “chlorine” in it’s ingredients – you are still swimming so 25 x the more chemicals than you would be in a chlorine pool! Hard to swallow those facts? We thought so!
The buildup of the products in a Baquacil pool occurs 20 x faster than in a chlorine pool and cannot be oxidized (burnt out) like we can with a chlorine system. Over time (even within a couple of summers) there is so much matter that is built up in a Baquacil pool that the pool must be drained and sand must be changed in the filter to even make the pool manageable (without algae growth problems occurring).
Pros of Baquacil:
Swimsuits will not fade (although if a chlorine pool is always properly maintained between 1-3 ppm that will not happen either – it can only occur when chlorine parameters are kept extremely high)
Eyes will not burn (unless pH is off). However, your eyes will not burn if the chlorine is kept in the proper parameters.
You wont have that chlorine smell (however you wont have any odor of chlorine on a traditional chlorine pool if the chlorine level is not too high or too low, which might be causing you to smell the chloramines or the bacteria in the water).
