Get Rid of the Bacteria that is Hiding in the Plumbing in your Hot Tub
March 09/2020

Bacteria is a major issue that you fight against in a hot tub on a regular basis. Why is this? It’s because of the temperature of the water along with poor circulation and lack of sanitizer. Think of it this way…if you filled a glass of water and left it on the table for a couple weeks or left your bathtub full of water for a month, you would come back and notice that there would be things growing in it. Those “things” that are floating is called bacteria. The same goes for your hot tub if you have poor circulation, have left your hot tub drained, or if you have a lack of sanitizer.

Improper Circulation Causes Problems
As with the cup of water or the bathtub full of water for weeks on end, you can imagine the culprit is partially due to no circulation or filtration. There is nothing moving the water around or filtering out the particles that are forming. This also happens with hot tubs, either due to poor circulation systems, not filtering the water often enough, or draining the spa and not removing all of the water that was left in the plumbing for an extended period of time. All of these factors lead into the problem with bacteria growing in the plumbing of your hot tub. This can lead to a stinky mess.

Lack of Sanitizer Will Lead to Disaster
The other main reason that bacteria will start to form in the hot tub, whether it is filled or drained, is lack of sanitizer. The only way to know if you need to add sanitizer or adjust your pH is by testing the hot tub often. You are unable to know what the chemical levels are of your hot tub water just by smelling it. If you aren’t testing often enough, you will not know when it is time to add sanitizer, which will lead to bacteria forming. Properly maintaining your water will insure that it is ready to use anytime you are ready and you won’t have to worry about passing bacteria’s back and forth between friends and family!

Clean your Hot Tub Plumbing Often
There is a product called Swirl Away that will clean out the plumbing in your hot tub. You can use this product every few months or once a year to do a deep cleaning to get rid of any bacteria or deposits that might be lingering. Regardless of how often you use this product, it is still important to maintain proper water chemistry always, to prevent the spread of bacteria. Stagnant, under treated water can become a huge problem.

How to use Swirl Away
Before draining your spa for your regular 3-4 month intervals, it’s recommended to add half of the bottle of Swirl Away after removing your hot tub filters. Let the product run thru the spa for a couple hours and then unplug the spa and drain it out. After the hot tub is drained, continue to leave the filters out, refill the hot tub, and allow the spa to cycle for at least another hour, to insure the remaining bacteria, debris and foam have been removed from the plumbing. Unplug the hot tub once again and drain the water and refill. Once the hot tub is refilled you can clean the filters and then put them back in the hot tub and continue on with your normal chemical procedure, such as adding the metal and stain control first and then waiting 24 hrs (once the water is up to temperature) before adding any other sanitizers or pH adjusters. Now you will have a fresh and clean hot tub for many more months with proper maintenance!
