Hot Tub Rash (Folliculitis) - Causes and How To Treat
March 14/2020

Maintaining your hot tub water is extremely important to prevent diseases and bacteria from being spread between your family members and friends who may come over to enjoy your spa from time to time. It’s no shock that soaking in a body of hot water can foster bacteria if not properly maintained. Folliculitis can only occur if a body of water, such as your hot tub, has not been properly sanitized, even for a short period of time.

What is folliculitis?
Folliculitis occurs when bacteria gets into your hair follicles and causes an infection. Your skin will become blotchy with red spots, which will itch something terrible. The blisters can even be puss filled. To read more about this condition, click here.

How to prevent?
Always checking your hot tub on a daily basis and maintaining the proper levels per CDC code:
  • Chlorine levels of 3 parts per million (ppm) or slightly higher
  • Bromine levels of 5ppm or slightly higher
  • pH between 7.2 and 7.8.
This will insure that your water is always properly balanced and that you can adjust your levels once they start to slightly fall away from these parameters, prior to bacteria taking over. Bacteria grows at such a quick rate, even over night the bacteria can triple in force! This means that even by morning, you would have to add at minimum 3 times as much product to correct the situation than if you had tested it before your levels were completely to 0.

How to treat hot tub rash?
It is always recommended to see an Omaha Doctor (Dermatologist) to find a treatment that is best for you. Here is an at-home-remedy that you can try in the meantime while waiting to get in to see the doctor. To find a list of local Omaha dermatologists, click here!

White Vinegar Compress (Mix 1 oz of white vinegar with 4 oz of lukewarm water. Dip rag or paper towel in mixture and ring out. Apply the cloth to the infected area for 20 mins at a time, no more than 4 times a day. Then apply hydrocortisone cream for anti-itching relief).
