Hot Tub Water Chemistry Tip 8 Drain and Refill Spa Every 3-4 Months!
March 15/2020 Have you ever been so busy and pre-occupied with other things going on in your life that you forget to drain your hot tub every 3-4 months like you should? Maybe you are just a little over that time frame, or maybe you have really forgotten and it’s been 6-7 months since you last drained! It’s okay, we all forget from time to time….now, where was I going with this? Oh yeah, forgetfulness! We have heard of some funny stories over the years of this exact scenario. A gentleman came in one time to get a few chemicals he was getting low on and I happened to ask him if he needed new filters for his next hot tub drain and refill. He looked puzzled and then said, “You have to drain these things?” He had had his spa for 2 years and hadn't drained it yet, but we got him back on track! Here’s the reasons why it’s so important!
Why is Draining Your Spa's Water Important?
Every time you use your hot tub, you perspire approximately 4 tsp during a 30 min session per person. If you calculate this up over how many times you use a spa a week (lets say 4 times a week) and then take that times 4 months. This means that you are leaving behind approximately 256 tsp of perspiration per person within the recommended length of 3-4 months that the water remains in the spa and is treated. After this much sweat, on top of all the other particles of dead skin cells, hair follicles, and other matter, your filter can’t hardly keep up, even after rinsing it out and your hot tub water gets into a confused and saturated state. This will make it extremely hard to balance your chemicals, keep your pH in the correct range and keep the water looking clear. That is why it is recommended to drain the water in your hot tub every 3-4 months or sooner with heavier use.
