How To Protect Your Hot Tub During A Storm or Power Outage
March 08/2020

Whether it is preparing for wind, a snow storm, heavy rainfall, extreme cold or anything in between, there are several ways to protect your hot tub.

Lock Cover
Insure that your hot tub cover is always locked with the straps and locks provided. If all 4 of your hot tub cover locks are not in working order, it is important to either replace the clips as needed and to replace your hot tub cover on a regular basis. These locks will prevent heavy winds from flipping the cover open (or taking off with it completely) and will help to maintain the highest amount of heat for efficiency.

Tighten Straps
It’s important to tighten down your hot tub cover straps so that they are not loose, which could allow wind to whip it around.

Add Additional Wind Straps
If you are in a heavy wind area and would like additional protection, you can simply add additional wind straps which will put 4 additional locks in place to further prevent damage. These straps are adjustable for all models up to 91x91 and are very easy to install.

Check On Power
It’s important to check your hot tub on a regular basis to make sure that you have adequate power and that your GFCI breaker has not tripped off for some reason. This is why it is so important to also test your hot tub water every few days and maintain the chemicals, even if you are not using it much. Checking on your hot tub every few days allows you to constantly maintain peace of mind that everything is working correctly, especially if a storm recently occurred. In the winter time it is especially crucial because after just a few days your hot tub can decrease in temp by up to 40 degrees or more, which could cause additional freeze damage if not caught early enough.

Leave Cover Closed
If you do find out that you did lose power to your hot tub and are unable to get it back on right away, especially in the winter time, it’s important to keep your hot tub cover closed at all times to prevent heat loss. Maintaining above freezing temperatures in the hot tub is the most crucial thing until power is restored to the unit. Marquis hot tubs are very well insulated and with our heat sealed hot tub covers, it takes longer for the heat to escape, which is beneficial in many circumstances.

Small Ceramic Space Heater
If you are unsuccessful in getting your hot tub kicked back on and are in need of service during the winter months, it would be beneficial to take off the motor compartment door to the equipment area and place a ceramic space heater near the equipment area and build a “tent”. This will help to keep enough warmth to keep the water in the plumbing near the pump, heater and fittings in the motor compartment to prevent ice from building up. When a ceramic heater is used, as soon as power is restored, the hot tub equipment can be kicked back on immediately without having to worry about thawing out the pumps prior to kicking the unit on, which just takes more time.
Following these guidelines and always keeping an eye on your hot tub will prevent costly repairs during and after storms!
