How long does my aboveground swimming pool liner last?
March 18/2020 The typical life span of an aboveground pool liner is 4-6 years, although there are a lot of factors that go into the longevity of the liner.
Here are a few examples of what might cause the liner to fail:
Chlorine levels being kept too high or too low (high chlorine will start to fade the colors and deteriorate the material of the liner – low chlorine will cause algae growth which will adhere to the liner and cause damage)
pH levels being off (if the pH is too low, the water is very acidic and will start to eat away at the fibers of the liner. If the pH is too high, it will cause calcium deposits to form which will calcify the liner)
Storm damage – any large debris that falls in can possibly puncture the liner
Wear and Tear – punctures can occur from too much rough housing in the pool
Hard Water – Calcium and other metals in the water can adhere to the surface of the liner if the metals are not protected by using a metal and stain control on a regular basis.

It’s time to replace the liner if:
- The liner is pulling out from the track of the pool – at that point it can usually not be fixed because the liner has stretched and will not fit properly.
- If the pattern or color has faded on the pool liner, which shows the integrity of the liner is no longer up to par.
- If multiple tears have been patched or if good size tears are evident.
- If calcification has occurred causing the liner to become hard and rough.
