How to properly add chlorine to your swimming pool!
March 08/2020

Ever wonder what might be the best way to add chlorine to your pool? Wondering if there might be an easier way? Well there probably is! There are 4 different ways that you can add chlorine to your aboveground or in-ground swimming pool, which include:

Automatically feeding the chlorine thru an inline chlorinator
A small vessel is installed filter side, where the water will run thru the vessel after the water has been cleaned through your filter system and then evenly dissolves the tablets as needed, preventing too much or too little of chlorine from being in the pool at any given time. There is enough space in these chlorinators to hold up to 2 weeks worth of chlorine! This means, you can take a family vacation in the middle of the summer and not worry about returning home to a green pool! This is the safest, easiest, and most economical way to feed chlorine into your pool – you will cut down the amount of chlorine you are consuming, saving you money in the long run because you are able to keep better tabs of your chlorine level at all times!

Chlorine tablets in your pool skimmer basket
You can easily toss in a chlorine tablet or two in your pool skimmer basket, which will allow the water that is pouring over it to evenly erode the tablets and disperse them evenly throughout the pool. The only downfall to doing this is the chlorine tablets are easily accessible in most instances and the kids may be tempted to take them out and play with them.

Floating pool chlorine dispenser
For many years, the good ol’ plastic chlorine dispenser was thought to be the best way to add chlorine to your pool, however many studies have been done over the years and prove otherwise. With a floater, the chlorine is dispensing only within apprx. 2 feet of where the floater is at, meaning if you test your chlorine where the floater has been you will normally have a good chlorine reading. However, testing the chlorine on the opposite end of the pool will show there is usually very little chlorine. The dispenser does not allow you the best circulation to properly erode the tablets quick enough and can lead to spots of algae in the dead pockets of the pool where no chlorine is present. There are better ways to introduce chlorine into your pool other than using a dispenser.

Granulated quick dissolving chlorine granulars
If you don’t want to worry about adding a chlorine feeder, don’t want the kids playing with a floating dispenser or taking the tablet out of the skimmer basket, your ultimate solution is to use quick dissolving granulated chlorine! This chlorine dissolves quickly and you can throw it directly into the pool without having to pre-mix it in water. Simply add it in when you need to and you can jump in shortly after. If you travel often, it is important to have somebody in charge of checking and adding granular chlorine to the pool while you are gone to prevent algae from forming. It is not uncommon to have to add granular chlorine every few days, depending on the size of the pool.
