Replacing hot tub filters, why it’s important
March 09/2020

Every hot tub has a filter. Some may have multiple cartridges. Have you ever wondered why it’s important to replace your hot tub filter on a regular basis? Maybe they look clean and you wonder if you can stretch it just a little longer. If you don’t replace your hot tub filters on a regular basis, you could be causing yourself a lot more headaches…

How do the filter work:
Cartridge filters are made of a special paper that has a triangle cut to it when examined under a microscope. With usage and cleaning, that triangle cut is worn smooth. When that sharper edge is worn down you lose part of the ability for the paper to hold debris.

Even better way to filter:
Filter cartridges are also available with an antibacterial additive in the paper. The additive will help to prevent bacteria forming and growing on the cartridge itself. This paper may be blue instead of white to indicate a difference in the paper. This cartridge will have the same function as the standard filter and requires the same cleaning process and replacement timeframe, but will help you to use a lot less chemicals in the meantime!

What happens over time:
As the filter is used, oils and debris collect in the fibers. Monthly cleaning is done by rinsing filter out thoroughly using a garden hose. A filter wand adapter can be attached to the end of the hose to direct the water pressure deeper into the filter pleats, which is where all the debris is trapped.

Cleaning Tips:
Every three months when the tub is drained the filter should be soaked over-night in a special acid solution such as Filter Fresh to deep clean the paper of debris and oils that it has trapped from use. After soaking be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove any residue from the filter paper. With all the use and cleaning the fiber of the paper begins to break down. This deterioration process can make the spa water cloudy as it allows small particles to float through the filter and back in to the hot tub.

Indications that your filter cartridge needs replaced sooner than a year include cracks on the top or bottom of the cartridge, a broken band around the outside of the pleats, cracked or broken inner core and loose pleats.

With normal use and proper cleaning, a filter cartridge should last up to a year. Replacing the filter cartridge every nine to twelve months will help keep your spa water sparkling clear and inviting to use!
