Swimming Pool Care After A Rainstorm - What to do?
March 08/2020 After a rainstorm your pool might look less than desirable. What do I need to do after a rainstorm to make sure my pool stays clear (or to get it clear again!) We will show you what you need to do!
Chlorine Pool
If you are on a standard chlorine pool (using granular or chlorine tablets) it is important to test your water right after the rain so we can know exactly where we are and what we are dealing with. If your chlorine level is low, add some additional chlorine to increase the level. If your chlorine is fine or high, you shouldn’t need to do much. Now for the pH – rain can directly affect your pH level and it can change vary rapidly after a single rainstorm. Test your pH and if needed apply your pH increase or decrease as needed. Due to the additional rain, it is recommended to add some additional clarifier, especially if it was a heavy rain. It may be recommended as well to add some additional metal control for the additional water that was added, to prevent iron, rust, copper or calcium issues. If the water is perfectly clear, there is nothing further you need to do. If the water is slightly cloudy after the rain, wait until it is dark and add 1-2 bags of shock. It may take a day or two for your crystal clear pool to return. Continue checking your chemical levels daily until you reach the clarity you desire.
Salt Pool
If you have a salt system on your pool, start by checking your chlorine and pH levels after the rainstorm. If your chlorine level is showing low, you can simply up your salt system output or even click it over to supershock. This will give your sanitizer the boost it needs to help recover your low sanitizer level. Also check to see if your salt cell needs to be cleaned. f the pH needs to be adjusted, do so. Add an additional dose of clarifier, which is always recommended after a rain storm, especially if your pool is not covered. If your pool is somewhat cloudy from the rain, introduce 1-2 bags of a chlorinated shock to your water to give it a boost. Retest once each day for the next few days as needed until you are back on track. Additional metal control may be recommended to prevent iron, rust, copper and calcium issues from the added rain water.
Baquacil
On a Baquacil System, test your sanitizer, oxidizer and pH levels with your test strips. Adjust your sanitizer, oxidizer, and pH levels if needed using the proper product. It is recommended on this type of system to add a dose of your Performance Algaecide after it has rained. If your pool is slightly cloudy, a dose of CDX may be needed to boost your other chemicals reactivity. Check once per day with your test strips until all levels are normal and water clarity has returned.
It is also a good idea to have your phosphates checked regardless of which system you might be on. Phosphates are harmful products in your water that aid algae in growing – it is the food algae feeds on. Phosphates can appear after a rain storm or simply from settled and decayed debris such as dirt and leaves that may have entered after the storm.
