Top 10 Hot Tub No-No's!
March 09/2020

A lot of service related phone calls that we receive from customers that need service done on their spa are usually due to at least one of these 10 things. There are many service related issues that could be resolved and or never created to start with by following these tips on “what not to do to your hot tub!”

10 Things You Should Never Do To Your Hot Tub….
  • Don’t turn the power off to the spa – This is especially true during the winter months, but can also be dangerous during the summer as well. Not only with the water go south, gaskets can dry out and not seal properly, or the spa could freeze.
  • Don’t ignore your water chemistry if you aren’t using the spa – The water must be properly maintained at all times to keep it in good condition, regardless of how often you use it.
  • Don’t let your hot tub cover get so heavy you can’t lift it – Your hot tub cover is one of the most important factors in maintaining the best insulation value for your money. If it is heavy, there is no insulation value, period.
  • Don’t run your spa with the filters out – The filters are in the spa to capture the debris and the body oils. If the filters are left out all of that debris will not be filtered and will all end up in your plumbing and pumps, causing them to not work or to burn out.
  • Don’t forget to clean your filters once a month and replace them yearly, no matter what – Rinsing the filter out with hot water once a month will keep the filter working at its prime capacity. ALWAYS replace the spa filters after 9-12 months of use, regardless of how they look.
  • Don’t forget to add a metal remover to the water after refilling – This is a must for most of our clients due to the hardness of our water. Adding this product as soon as you refill the spa and waiting 24 hrs will prevent any calcium or hard metals from building up in the spa and causing a water chemistry issue.
  • Don’t use the hot tub as a bathtub to clean off the dirt and grime – If you have been working out in the yard or just finished at the gym, it’s always recommended to shower first before entering the spa. This will eliminate all of the body oils including sweat that would be coming off of your body and clouding up your water.
  • Don’t forget to look in the motor compartment on a regular basis – Catching a leak or discovering that something isn’t working correctly is the key to prevention. If you can catch those things early enough before they have caused damage, you will save yourself hundreds of dollars in repairs.
  • Don’t use the spa if the chemicals are not properly balanced or the water looks or smells funky – This is a very important step to insure that no bacteria’s are passed between the other members that are soaking in the spa as well.
  • Don’t forget to change your water every 3-4 months – Waiting too long to replace the water can cause bacteria to build up in the plumbing, therefore making it hard even once the water is changed to regulate the chemicals.
Follow these tips to insure that your hot tub is always working properly and ready for you to use it! Avoiding these mistakes will save you hundreds of dollars every single year that you own your spa!
