Why did my swimming pool heater rust out?
March 15/2020

A pool heater is made up internally of metal coils which help to produce the heat that warms your pool. When your pH level is not properly maintained, it can greatly lower the lifespan of your pool heater. Here are some things to always watch for and maintain properly, especially if you have a pool heater!

Proper pH level
Your pH level should be as close to 7.5 as possible. If your pH is extremely low, that is when the acidic pool water will start to corrode the lining of your pool heater. If your pH is extremely high, it will allow calcium and other minerals to coat the coils, which will not effectively allow your pool heater to operate. Low pH is considered anything 7.2 and lower and high pH is considered anything above 7.8. Keeping your pH level in the middle grounds near 7.5 will not only make your chemicals more effective, will also keep your skin feeling softer, your eyes from burning, and will help to prolong the life of your pool heater as well as your motor, pump seals, and other equipment.

Proper chlorination
It is important to always keep a proper level of chlorine in the pool, to keep your chlorine level stable around 2-3 ppm. If you constantly have a high chlorine reading (over 10 ppm) it can cause premature damage to your equipment and pool heater. It is also important to put your chlorine tablets in the pump pot of your motor, to add your auto chlorinator in front of the heater, or to pour shock or any other granular chlorine straight down your skimmer. All of those things can cause damage to not only your pool heater, but also your pump seals, motors and other equipment.

Proper amounts of metal control
Metals and minerals are very important in the water, but sometimes we can have an overabundance of them, which can cause issues. If we have too much iron, copper, manganese, or calcium it can cause those metals to cake up on your heater coils and will prevent it from working properly. Using a metal control product, such as Metal Free or Sequa Sol will prevent those items from causing issues not only in the pool, but with the heater and the rest of your equipment.

Prevention is KEY. If you can properly maintain your pool, in the correct parameters, you will prevent costly repairs from having to be done to your pool throughout the summer.
