Why is my Swimming Pool Still Cloudy? The areas you might not be looking....
March 14/2020

Have you been fighting a cloudy pool for several days or even weeks now? Maybe you just recently opened the pool, had a big pool party or are trying to get it ready for that perfect holiday party! There are several areas of the pool that you will need to look at to find the problem, some areas you might have never thought of even looking!

Cloudy water usually starts mainly from one thing; lack of sanitizer. If you always have an adequate amount of sanitizer, such as chlorine, in the pool you will never have a problem with the water turning cloudy or going green. It’s as simple as that, well sometimes! Although this is the main reason that your pool can be cloudy, it might not be the only reason.

Lurking in the pool filter
Do you know what’s lurking in your pool filter? Whether it’s a D.E. filter, cartridge filter, or sand filter, there are issues that can arise with the filter system, causing it to not properly filter the water and therefore causing the pool to become cloudy.

On a D.E. Filter it’s important to check the pressure gauge and see if it’s time to clean the filter and re apply more D.E. powder to allow it to filter out the debris and particles in the pool. Also insure that there are no holes in the D.E. grids that could hinder the filter from cleaning properly.
On a Cartridge Filter it’s just as important to check the pressure gauge and see if your cartridge needs to be rinsed off or soaked in a special filter cleaning solution to allow it to filter properly again. Your filter may also need to be totally replaced; they typically last 1 season for most filters.
On a Sand Filter it may be time to backwash if your pressure gauge is reading high, or it might be time to fully change the sand. Over time, the sand can become so saturated with debris and even calcified that the water is not allowed to be filtered correctly, therefore causing the pool to go cloudy. It’s also important when you go to change the sand that you don’t tip over the filter when emptying it out, to insure that you don’t break the laterals that are at the bottom. Insure that the laterals are still in good condition and don’t have any cracks in them, or they will need to be replaced. This can allow sand back in your pool as well.

A white water what?
It’s called a White Water bacteria and it can form in the pool again due to lack of sanitizer. It can easily be killed with enough chlorine (adding several more tabs to the skimmer basket or raising the output on the chlorinator). We would recommend contacting us so we can figure out the proper amount of shock that will need to be added in conjunction with the additional chlorine.

Clarifier Saves the Day!
We always recommend to use a strong concentrated clarifier, such as GLB Clear Blue on a regular, weekly basis to insure that your filter is able to properly pull the small particles out of the water that may build up and cause the water to go cloudy. For a 10,000 gal pool, simply add 5-6 oz weekly, directly down your skimmer. Remember to add this product each time you backwash or clean the filter as well. This product is perfectly safe to use with all of the different types of filters.

Get an Angry Egg!
Want a fast way to clear up the pool? Who doesn’t! It’s important to follow all of the other steps above as well, but there is one last product that can speed up the process! Welcome to the wonderful world of an ANGRY EGG! This little creature comes in the shape of an egg and holds 5 lbs of pure goodness that will help to eliminate your cloudy pool even faster! The awesome thing about this product is you can watch it work right before your eyes! It will sink to the bottom of the pool and within 15 mins will dispense the product and then rise the empty egg to the surface!

Make sure to follow all of these tips to insure that your pool gets back to that beautiful sparkling Caribbean blue and stays that way all summer! Want more information? Contact us.
