Why is my hot tub cover so heavy?

Hot tub covers have one main purpose; to insulate the hot tub to prevent heat loss and evaporation. With age, your hot tub cover will become heavy. The reason the covers get heavy starts with the fact that the insulated foam cores inside your cover are aging. There may have been a recent storm that caused a tear in the vinyl material of the cover and it has now allowed water to soak through to the foam core. It could just simply be that the barrier surrounding the foam cores has been compromised due to age, the constant heat and the chemicals.
How to prevent the issue
Applying a protectant to your hot tub cover vinyl will prevent the vinyl from prematurely blistering or cracking, which can allow water into the foam cores, soaking in like a sponge. We recommend replacing your hot tub cover immediately if you notice storm damage or just age issues. This will prevent the cover from absorbing a ton of water very quickly. When your hot tub cover becomes that heavy, not only is it a burden to lift off, but it is also not doing its job in retaining your insulation value. This could make your energy bill skyrocket.

How long do hot tub covers last?
Hot tub covers typically last 5-7 years. There are many different manufactures out there and some lower quality built hot tub covers will only last a year or two at best. It’s important to replace your hot tub cover with a good quality cover to minimize the electrical cost of running the hot tub. Saving a little bit of money on a cheaper and lower quality hot tub cover could end up costing you hundreds over the course of just the first year.
