Why is my swimming pool water cloudy?
March 13/2020

Most likely, the cause is a Bacterial growth in the water.  This can be the result of 3 major categories:

1)      Inadequate filtration and circulation

2)      Shortage of sanitizer in the water

3)      Out of range PH

These problems that can be easily checked and tested to properly identify the cause.  Circulation is checked by simply putting a hand in front of the return jet, if you don’t feel adequate pressure or your pressure guage on your filter is showing no pressure or too high of pressure, this could be the culprit. The other two, a simple chemical test can determine the cause.  When using Chlorine, one’s sanitizer level should be between 1-3 ppm (parts per million).  If the test comes back and there isn’t enough sanitizer, that’s most likely the cause.  If the sanitizer and circulation are good, then checking the PH could be the problem.  An ideal PH level is between 7.2 and 7.8 with 7.5 matching the PH of the human body.  If the PH is over and one has cloudy water, then the “cloudiness” may actually be calcium suspended in the water.

All these problems can be fixed easily (although results make take several days before reaching the desired water quality in the pool). One of the biggest misconceptions is some believe that they must immediately drain the pool and start fresh. This may not be necessary and we would recommend talking with one of our six Certified Pool operators on staff to find the best solution for your situation. There are many options that can be done to fix most problems, to save the time and troubles of draining and refilling the pool and having to start fresh with all of your chemicals.
