Hot Tub Water Chemistry Tip 4 - Shock Your Spa Weekly!
March 15/2020

A base sanitizer of chlorine or bromine is just the start of maintaining crystal clear water, but it is not the only item that is needed. There is a full system of chemicals that must be followed to insure that your water is clean, clear and safe. Skipping just one of these steps can cause your water to have an odor, be cloudy, or allow unseen bacteria to build that is not noticeable from the naked eye.

Keep Your Chemical System Active!
Your sanitizer kills the bacteria in the water on a daily basis when it is added as needed. By adding "shock" on a weekly basis, you will be able to gas off the dead and decaying bacteria to prevent odors and water cloudiness. This will also help keep your chemical system active on a regular basis as this process allows your sanitizer to break free from the bacteria, allowing it to then continue killing additional fresh bacteria.

If you notice a strong chlorine odor emitting from the hot tub, this can actually signal the lack of sanitizer rather than an excessive dosage (although it could be either). The smell most likely is coming from chloramines, or decaying bacteria in the water. By "shocking" the hot tub water the decaying bacteria will be burnt out of the water in the gas-off process, leaving clearer, odor- free water!
Circulate Your Chemicals Properly.
It is especially important when adding shock to leave the spa cover at least half open for fifteen to thirty minutes to allow this gas-off process to occur. Always have the jets running to circulate the chemicals through the entire system so there is no stagnant water in the lines or un-dissolved chemicals coming in contact with the shell material that over time may cause staining or damage to the hot tub shell.

Try Non-Clorine Shock!
If you have an occasion where you have more people in the hot tub for an extended period of time, non-chlorine shock can also be added for additional sanitization during use. By adding the non-chlorine shock directly to the filter cartridge, the granules will be slowly released into the spa water without raising the chlorine level but will help to maintain the water during that initial soak time.

TIP: If you are on a bromine system, the shock process needs to occur more frequently than once a week. When using bromine as your sanitizer instead of chlorine, you will need to add 1 oz of shock per person that just used the spa upon exiting the hot tub. Leave the jets running when you are adding any chemicals to insure they are circulated through.
