Hot Tub Water Chemistry Tips 1 - Test Your Spa Often!
March 15/2020

"I can tell just by looking at my Omaha hot tub that the water is balanced.” “If I can smell chlorine I know there is enough sanitizer in the water.” “The water feels good so it must be okay to use, right?” Too bad none of these statements are true, but that doesn't mean it’s hard to maintain proper water quality in your spa.

Testing your Omaha hot tub water on a daily or every other day basis makes it easy to maintain the proper water chemistry balance. This will help you get into a pattern of how often you need to add chemicals to your hot tub depending on your usage. Being able to make minor adjustments more quickly will catch changes before they become major issues. Test strips are an easy way to test the water.

Using Hot Tub Test Strips Properly!
There are four pads on your test strips that you will be checking for: bromine, chlorine, alkalinity and pH. Simply dip the test strip into the water and then match the color change on the pads to the chart on the back of the bottle. Proper sanitizer level kills the bacteria in the water, which will insure that the water is safe to use! The pH level can affect things such as the effectiveness of your sanitizer as well as the life of the spa equipment. High pH will take more sanitizer to get the same treatment in the water and can also cause grit on the spa shell. Low pH means the water is more acidic which can cause the water to make your skin itchy and dry and can damage spa equipment like the heater causing expensive repair bills. Don’t go by just the smell of the water, you will never be able to “smell out” the levels of pH and chlorine properly.

Get Accurate Results with a Liquid Drop Kit for Your Omaha Hot Tub!
A more accurate alternative to test strips is by a liquid drop kit. Some like the convenience of simply dipping a strip in the water, but a lot of people find it hard to determine what the pads are saying from time to time. This is because the pads on the test strips may turn a darker color in the middle of the pad, and be a lighter shade around the outside. Which one is it closest to? Sometimes you just have to give it the best guess. When using a liquid test kit, it’s very easy and the colors can’t be mistaken for incorrect levels! The test kit tubes are filled with water from the hot tub and then a few drops of a colored solution will be added. Simply put the cap on both sides of the test kit, invert a couple times and then hold up to natural sunlight. You are guaranteed to know what level your chlorine/bromine and pH is at within seconds without any guessing! With these simple steps, you will have one of the best hot tubs in Omaha!
