3 Reasons Drinking in the Hot Tub Is a No-No
March 14/2020

It’s important to know the dangers that drinking while soaking in your hot tub can cause. Know the risks before entering the water!

Extreme dehydration
Naturally your body will begin to perspire shortly after entering the hot tub due to the heat. It is no different than running, exercising or playing sports – your body temperature starts to rise in the hot tub just like it would if you were partaking in any of those other activities that you naturally break a sweat at. When your body sweats, you are losing hydration. Alcohol also makes you dehydrated, even if you aren’t in the hot tub! The effects are multiplied and happen twice as fast when you mix alcohol and hot water therapy together. Extreme dehydration can occur quickly and without much warning. This is why it is recommended to bring a glass of water with you during your soak, to re-hydrate yourself. Alcohol does not take the place of water in this equation.

Heat Exhaustion
Along with dehydration, your blood vessels open up during your hot tub soak and alcohol consumption speeds this up. Once your blood vessels have opened up so much, if you are not re-hydrating yourself properly (that means with water), heat exhaustion can occur quickly and it can be deadly. The symptoms of this can be: confusion, dizziness, fainting, fatigue, headache, nausea, extreme sweating, and rapid heartbeat. To reverse this affect, you need to quickly and carefully get out of the hot tub, drink plenty of cold water and take a cool shower. Make sure to always have a coherent friend nearby to ensure your well-being.

Unconsciousness
Ultimately the worst case scenario can be unconsciousness. If the warning signs have been ignored for far too long, this is the reality. If this were to happen while you are still in the hot tub, drowning can become a serious reality. Even stumbling around in the hot tub can cause broken bones, as well as trying to get out of the tub if the warning signs have already hit. At this point, you lose most of your realistic capabilities to function properly. Know the warning signs and refrain from drinking alcohol in the hot tub!
