Chemicals ARE needed, even with a hot tub ozonator!
March 08/2020

There is a lot of misinformation out there in regards to caring for your hot tub with an ozonator. Ozonoators can not fully replace using chemicals which means chemicals are still required, but in a lower dosage amount and usually less frequently.

The Truth:
Ozonators can decrease your overall chemical consumption cost by a considerable amount (up to 40%). Ozonators help aid your sanitizer (chlorine or bromine) to be more effective in small amounts, however chemicals will still be needed to maintain a properly sanitized hot tub. Ozonators do not last forever and will need to be replaced overtime.

How do ozonators work?
Ozone gas is produced when oxygen is exposed to ultraviolet light or by "corona-discharge" in newer ozonators. It is the same gas that provides the protective layer around the earth's atmosphere. When ozone gas is injected into your spa water, it acts as a powerful sanitizer that destroys most of the bacteria and viruses present in the spa water. Ozone also breaks down body oils so your water will remain clear and fresh for a longer period than spa water that is only sanitized by bromine or chlorine. By using an ozonator, you will be able to keep your bromine or chlorine concentration at the low end of the "ideal" scale, therefore cutting your chemical consumption costs down.

What products do I still need to use?
It is still recommended to use a sanitizer (chlorine or bromine), non chlorine shock, pH adjusters as needed, iron and calcium remover (when refilling spa) and clarifier. Even though you still use most of the same chemicals, your ozonator will help to cut the consumption cost of the chemicals way down, saving you additional money.

Are there any other options?
Absolutely! You can reap all of the same benefits from a Nano or Nature Stick, which gets replaced every 3 or 6 months when refilling your hot tub! The Nano stick lasts twice as long and can take you through 2 water changes (totaling 6 months)! Activated by light and water, these are a more simplistic way to help cut your chemical consumption! On an ozonator system, it’s recommended to keep your chlorine level around 1-2 ppm and bromine around 4 ppm. With the Nano or Nature Stick, you can actually keep your chlorine level .5-1ppm! These sticks do work significantly better with chlorine vs bromine.
