Don’t winterize your swimming pool too soon, here’s why!
March 09/2020

Now that the kiddos are back to school, you may be thinking the next project on your list should be closing up the pool. With all of the kids sports starting up soon and all of their after school activities, you don’t think you’ll have time to swim anymore, so why keep it running right? Wrong! Here’s why we recommend keeping it open long to prevent further issues:

Circulating water prevents bacteria growth
Until the temperatures outside are consistently 55 degrees or less (not any warmer than that), it is best to keep the filter system running 24/7 and continue to keep the chlorine and pH levels in the correct ranges. If the pool is closed down too soon and the temps are still too warm outside, algae will start to breed extremely fast before the water has a chance to freeze.

Closing your pool down in August in the Midwest is never a good idea. August is one of the hottest months usually and algae can start to form within a couple days if the filter system is not running. Mid to late September is usually the best time (weather depending) to close down the pool in the Omaha metro.

It will cost less to keep it running
But I don’t want to pay to run the pump and spend the money on chemicals if we aren’t going to be using the pool! In reality, you will actually be protecting your investment and it will end up costing you far less to keep the water circulating and chemically treated for an additional month or so. You will more than likely spend less than $40 for electricity and chemicals in the final month of pool season. Algae will cost far more to clean up than that.

Algae = costly mistake
Algae can always be cleaned up, however it can be costly to do so. It will also require more of your time cleaning and vacuuming the pool. It can take up to 2 weeks to turn the water completely back around once algae has started to form. Algae can stain your liner and may not come back out again. On average, most people will spend at least $65 in chemicals to kill the bacteria, in order to get the water clear again and often 4-6 hrs of time cleaning the pool.

Don’t make this costly mistake – don’t close down your pool too early!
