Find A Warm Day & Drain The Hot Tub
March 14/2020

Now that it’s already February and you have gotten tons of use out of your hot tub over the winter, it might be time to look at finding a warm day to drain and refill it! Here are the tips and tricks to drain, clean and refill your hot tub during the cold months!

Above Freezing:
The first thing to make sure of when draining your hot tub and refilling it is that you find a day that is above freezing. It doesn’t have to be super warm, as it usually is not in February in Omaha, but it just needs to be above 32 degrees.

Where to drain the water:
It’s important to always drain your hot tub away from the house, especially in the winter time. You don’t want the water pooling by your patio doors, which would cause a layer of ice and make it very hard to get in and out without falling. You also don’t want the water freezing against basement windows or up against the house to prevent any damage. Run the garden hose to the farthest point out in the yard that you can and let it go! It is important to still go out and move the house a couple times while it is draining, to allow the water to drain in a different area instead of all in one place.

Cleaning the Hot Tub:
It’s important to always wipe down the inside of the shell to remove any dirt, debris, or hard water deposits before refilling. You can do this with a wet rag or by using Natural Clear, which is a very light cleaner that does not have to be removed back off your hot tub shell before refilling. This will remove all of those particles. It’s important to also rinse out or replace your hot tub filters at this time as well. If it’s time to soak your filters in the filter solution over night, it is best that you have a second set of filters on hand to switch out. You won’t want to leave your hot tub down over night while you filters continue to soak during the winter months.

Refilling the hot tub:
Once you have everything cleaned out and your filters are ready to go again, immediately fill up the hot tub again. Once the spa is filled up, add the first product which is a metal and stain control to the water which will protect your hot tub against calcium, iron, copper and other hard metals that are in your water. You will let the fresh water heat up to temperature with this one product only for the first 24 hrs. After the 24 hrs is over, you can continue on with the rest of your routine chemical maintenance to get the hot tub water ready to use! Ready…Set….Enjoy!!
