How to convert your swimming pool from Baquacil to Chlorine
March 08/2020

The best time to switch your pool from Baquacil to Chlorine would be early in the spring or late in the fall. It can take approximately 2-5 weeks for the full conversion, so allow yourself enough time at the beginning or end of the season to do so, without cutting into your best swimming months!

Rid the pool of remaining Baquacil
This is the first and most important step. We have to get all of the remaining Baquacil out of the swimming pool in order to properly convert the pool into a chlorine system. First start by adding a bottle of GLB’s XChange product. This full bottle will be added to the pool water with the pump circulating. The pump will need to be in circulation through the entire process.

Test Baquacil levels
It is important to continually test your Sanitizer, Oxidizer and pH levels – we need to get the sanitizer and oxidizer levels completely down to zero so they are not registering anymore. This can take the longest amount of time out of the whole process. Once your sanitizer and oxidizer levels are near zero, then we can proceed to the next step.

A swamp may occur
Once the levels have gotten to zero and we have kept the pH as close to 7.5 as possible, it is time to start introducing the chlorine to the swimming pool water. Simply add 2-3 chlorine tablets into your pool skimmer basket so that they can erode evenly throughout the water. Your pool may turn very green at this stage, due to the fact that we are burning out the rest of the Baquacil that may be remaining in the pool. Baquacil and chlorine do not mix in the fact that they are two totally different chemicals and once they mix together can cause an adverse effect, turning the pool green. Don’t worry however, this is a normal part of the process and can be a welcomed site knowing that you are getting closer to the finish line!

Keep levels established
It’s important to keep your chlorine and pH levels established at the correct levels at all times. Before your chlorine tablet is completely out, put in another tablet or two so there is always chlorine in the water. We will need to start shocking the pool with the chlorine shock weekly from this point forward – using a 1 lb bag per 10,000 gals. Make sure to add the chlorine shock only at night, after the sun has gone down. If it is added during the daylight hours, it is much less effective and will have to be repeated again later. Continue shocking the pool once per week.

Crystal clear and ready to go
After the pool has gone from green to crystal clear, you are now at the finish line! Continue to maintain your pool levels and adding the proper chemicals on a regular basis as instructed for regular maintenance. It is recommended to change your sand or replace the cartridge in your pool filter once you have completed the process, to prevent any contaminates from entering the pool again.

Now you can sit back and enjoy your pool!
