Why over-filling your pool can hurt your water quality!
March 07/2020 If some water is good, more is better right!? Not necessarily.
If your pool is over-flowing from the recent rains or if you left the garden hose in the pool a little too long, you could be causing more work for yourself when it comes to keeping your pool clean and clear.
The skimmer on most aboveground and inground pools all operate similar - they are designed to skim debris like bugs and leaves off the surface and siphon water like a vortex into your filter system to be cleaned and then returned.
So what happens when the water level is too high? The debris is not able to be pulled into the skimmer basket, as there is no space for the vortex to occur. The pool will ultimately be far dirtier if the water level remains high than if it was lowered to the proper level, which is usually mid-way up the skimmer faceplate.
Another issue that will occur, regardless if you use a floating chlorine dispenser, place the chlorine tabs in the skimmer basket or have an auto chlorinator, is that it will be harder to maintain the proper chlorine level in the pool. This is again due to the lack of the vortex through the skimmer, which therefore prevents the erosion of the chlorine on a more consistent basis. The lack of proper chlorine level can quickly lead to an algae or water clarity issue.
How do I drain my pool down? If you have a sand filter system, you can place the control valve onto WASTE until the water level is mid-way up the skimmer in the pool.
If you have a cartridge or DE filter system, the easiest way to drain water out of the pool is to use a sump pump. You can drain the water away from the pool and the house with a garden hose, or use it to water your lawn or flowers!
