pH Products: Liquid vs. Powder - Give Your Spa the Best!
March 08/2020

At Aqua Palace Spas and Pools, we love providing our Omaha and Council Bluffs customers as much knowledge as possible regarding your hot tub.  Many people come to our location to decide what type of hot tub they should purchase. Others ask more in depth questions such as, "what the difference is between liquid and powdered pH UP and DOWN products?" Today, we will be providing you what you need to know regarding liquid pH and powdered PF products! If you have any additional questions feel free to leave a comment below or stop by our location at 810 Woodbury Avenue, Council Bluffs, IA 51053.

Liquid pH Products vs. Powdered pH Products
Just as you have a liquid or a powder choice on multiple items such as dishwasher detergent and laundry detergent, you have the same options for pH adjusters for your hot tub! When you come in and ask for pH UP or DOWN, we will ask if you would like liquid or powder. But is there a difference in strength between the two you are probably asking? There really is no difference on how they work, just whichever you prefer. Some believe that the liquid will “soak in” faster than the powder, however there is no proof of that being the case. The powder products are extremely fine and with any leading brand name from a professional pool and spa store will be very effective strength-wise.

Aqua Palace Spas and Pools Hot Tip of the Week: pH is very important to keep track of. It’s critical to check your spa with either test strips or a liquid drop kit several times a week at minimum. This will insure that you can catch any gradual or possibly extreme changes in your pH before they become a huge issue. pH changes can occur simply upon changing the water after your 3-4 month increment or it could be because of perspiration, air borne debris, recent chemicals that have been added, aeration, and evaporation.
What’s the big deal about pH? Why do I have to check it?
The control of the pH is very important for several different reasons. The ideal range for pH is 7.2-7.6. If your pH is lower than 7.2 your water is acidic, this means that it can start to cause staining of the surface, irritation of the skin for the user, and corrosion of the equipment components such as the heater, pumps, and pump seals. If your pH is higher than 7.6 it is called basic. High pH can cause scaling in the water, skin and eye irritations, cloudy water, clogged heating elements and filters. At both extremes, your sanitizer (chlorine or bromine) is very un-effective if your pH is too high or too low.

Low and High pH will cause the following problems:
  • Irritation to your skin when using the spa
  • Corrosion of components in the spa (heater, pumps, pump seals)
  • Cloudy or not pristine water quality
  • Ineffectiveness of sanitizer (means you’ll be adding more to compensate)
  • Scaling of the inside of the hot tub, plumbing, and components
So the choice is yours – liquid or powder? Whichever you prefer to use is not the question really, it’s making sure you are using it when you need to!
